New Packaging Concept Challenges Glass and Cans
For some time ambient products have been packed in glass or cans. This severely restricts brand differentiation. Now, new plastic packaging offers a hard-pressed market new design flexibility and functionality.
The ambient market has been under price pressure for many years, and there has been minimal possibility for differentiation due to the high investments needed by both packaging and food packer if a new shape was to be introduced. Faerch Plast in Denmark has developed a new solution, which provides new opportunities for design and functionality. Instead of traditional glass or cans, food producers are now able to tailor packaging to fit the product like a glove and make it stand out from the competition.
Faerch Plast has made a series of new designs in combination with the launch of the new packaging concept. A tray for corn, which in its organic shape is so attractive that it easily makes the transition from microwave to table, and a tray that has a built in strainer. Ideal for diced beetroot, corn, peas and all those other small food elements. Or what about portion-packs? A smart idea with a promising future, especially with the growing number of single person households.
AMPET?- withstands sterilisation in standard retorts and autoclaves. Larsen Danish Seafood has already adopted the solution. It won the "Best Seafood Product Line" at the European Seafood Exhibition for their portions-packed marinated Mackerel Fillets.
Corn in a new, organic packaging design, which looks good on the table.Jens Bornstein, Managing Director of Faerch Plast has high expectation of AMPET? "It is a unique possibility for food producers to differentiate their products and at the same time save a considerable amount in packaging cost compared to traditional ambient sector packaging."
The new AMPET?solution also eliminates the age-old debate of whether cans taint the product. The migration from AMPET?is minimal which makes it ideal for delicate foods as well as more robust flavoured ones. Unlike cans, AMPET? is also suitable for storing in a refrigerator after opening. |

Long Serving Glue Dispensing Pumps
Kappa Corby Corlon Packaging demonstrate Watson Marlow's reliability, with glue dispensing pumps which have been operating for 16 years. High reliability and low maintenance are two important qualities of production line equipment in the packaging industry, and these qualities have been amply demonstrated in Watson-Marlow Bredel pumps at Kappa Corby Corlon Packaging, which have been dispensing glue for over 16 years with just an annual hose change and a twice yearly change of lubricant.Six Watson-Marlow Bredel SP10 hose pumps handling viscous, water based PVA glue run for 16 hours a day, five, or sometimes six, days a week. The pumps operate in two pairs (with two units on standby). Each pair pumps glue from 200 litre capacity tanks and delivers over a distance of approximately three metres to the glue pot of a dispensing machine. From the glue pot adhesive is dispensed to a "wheel" and from there it is applied to the flaps and joints of cardboard boxes.
With only the smooth bore natural rubber hose element of the pump in contact with the pumped product, and without the complication of seals, glands, diaphragms, valves, rotors and other mechanical parts, the peristaltic pump has obvious advantages.
Cleaning and hose changes are simple operations, and the highly accurate, low shear pumping action enables consistent flow rates to be maintained irrespective of changes in viscosity, and without risk of product degradation through separation or foaming. The gentle pumping action is particularly important when handling PVA products which tend to "ball-up" when subjected to shear forces.
At Kappa Corby, sensors continuously monitor levels in each glue pot, starting the pumps automatically when glue falls to a predetermined level, and stopping them when the level is restored. The pumps run at fixed speed of 38 rev/min and are fitted with 0.55 kW motors. Pump output is one litre per minute.
Throughout the highly competitive printing and packaging industries, where it is imperative that downtime and maintenance are kept to the practicable minimum,
Watson-Marlow Bredel peristaltic pumps are extensively used for handling adhesives, coatings and inks.
Mike Sullivan, UK Marketing Manager at Watson-Marlow Bredel comments:
"Watson-Marlow Bredel is a world leader in peristaltic pumping and continually aims to bring further improvements and extensions to its product range. Meanwhile an increasing number of engineers are recognising the benefits of peristaltic pumps and specifying them in an ever widening range of applications. |

Artenius PET Packaging Europe (APPE) is Europe’s leading manufacturer of PET preforms and single and two stage containers as well as being a pioneer of PET recycling in Europe.
Recyclable PET BottlesThe 35cl PET bottle, which is recyclable, has been produced by Artenius PET Packaging and was designed to replicate the glass bottle it replaces. Although traditionally PET bottles have much smaller dimensions than the equivalent sized glass bottles, for The Co-operative vodka, the task for the technical team at Artenius was to create a bottle with proportionate height and width. Keeping the height of the PET bottle comparable to the glass version was key to maximising on-shelf presence and also enabled The Co-operative to retain a similar size label, which ensures that all the required legal information can be easily incorporated.
The bottle is single stage stretch blow moulded on a Nissei machine. The GF305 neck finish uses the same screw cap as the glass bottle. Virgin PET was selected because it offers excellent clarity, which matches the purity of the vodka and projects a premium image for the spirit.
The PET bottle weighs 40g, representing an 85% saving over the glass alternative. this was a significant project in that it involved the retailer, filler and packaging manufacturer working together from the very early stages to ensure that the final pack met the needs of the consumer and the supply chain while also delivering positive environmental benefits,? comments Martene Spencer, Business Development Manager of Artenius PET Packaging Europe. |

Charles Revlon, founder of Revlon Cosmetics, once said: "we are not selling cremes, but hope wrapped up in small boxes". When it comes to packaging of luxurious perfumes and cosmetics, one will immediately think of elegant glass bottles, or stylish tubes and cans of metal, glass or plastic. This kind of packaging is called the primary packaging. Consumers, however, will see the secondary packaging first. Generally, the secondary packaging is a folded box protecting the contents. The more luxurious and expensive the product, the greater the chance one will encounter such secondary packaging. The box itself must reflect all aspects of the brand and, of course, of the product itself. According to various studies, the first contact only lasts for some seven seconds. Therefore, it is crucial to instantly captivate the attention of the customer and to ignite his or her desire for more. A perfume package needs to portray the character of the fragrance by the right choice of color graphics, surface structure, and material used.
The global packaging market for cosmetics and toiletries has been estimated to total EUR 9 billion four years ago and to grow to EUR 10.5 billion by the year 2005. Although the market for secondary packaging is dominated by cardboard, plastic usage is increasing. Initially used folded boxes made of PVC and PET allowed for transparent, crystal clear folded boxes. Printing, hot foil stamping, and holograms were used for decoration. Both materials, however, are very rigid and do not have the nice soft touch that polypropylene provides. Now, SML sleeve touch technology has made it possible, for the first time ever, to produce PP sheets in the required thickness gauge to be used for secondary packaging in the cosmetic industry. All optical properties, such as gloss, haze, and transparency, meet the market requirements.
Additionally, the PP sheets show excellent processing characteristics for subsequent printing, stamping, and gluing. Furthermore, special surfaces such as frosted or iced images can now be achieved by using mat or partly mat sleeves on the SML sleeve-touch roll stack. Thus, information and product name can be melt-embossed directly onto the PP film, opening up opportunities for completely novel ideas of designers. Easy-to-change sleeves on the SML equipment make it possible to operate short production runs. The sleeves can be stored and used for further orders at a later time. Such partly see-through packages, in combination with the nice haptics of the PP material, do exactly what they have been designed for: they attract attention, convey exclusivity, and create a desire for more. Recent SML sleeve touch technology equipment will definitely have an impact on this market, and more of these products will be seen and touched in the near future.? |
