Tottle Bottles
While the name ¡°tottle bottle¡± may not be familiar to consumers, the concept certainly is. These bottles are designed to stand on the cap. Tottle bottles have been an extremely popular choice in the beauty industry for both manufacturers as well as consumers. There are several benefits to choosing these cosmetic containers over other bottle designs.
Benefits of Using Plastic material to make the tottle bottle Due to the way tottle bottles are used, they must be made of a pliable plastic material. Choosing plastic over other materials can be beneficial as it is more cost effective to manufacture. For example, many companies are choosing to convert to plastic bottles from their older glass bottle designs. While glass bottles can look more expensive, they are just that: more expensive to manufacture. Many consumers prefer plastic containers as there isn¡¯t a risk of dropping and breaking the container, causing the product to be wasted. Brands that worry about making a product look less high end will be happy to see that the more current plastic containers can still maintain the aesthetic appeal, while making packaging more cost effective and accessible to customers.
Cleanliness and Health Concerns of Jars Health and safety concerns are one major reason that beauty brands are choosing to use tottle bottles to replace other containers. For those who are manufacturing creams and lotions, the standard in the past was to put the product in open jars. Many companies are still using this method. There are benefits to choosing the open jars such as making more of the product available to the consumer. Choosing an open jar allows for every last bit of product to be taken from the jar, not wasting anything and getting the most for the money paid. However, there are health concerns associated with this design.
Addressing Safety with a Tottle Design Those who use their fingers to transfer product from the container to the skin are at risk of spreading germs. Any residue on the hands will be transferred to the product. That can lead to bacteria spreading, just from using a beauty product. The jars also mean that environmental elements are more likely to affect the product. Leaving the jar open in a bathroom, for example, will allow the humid air to affect the product. Using tottle bottles eliminates these concerns. The plastic creates a barrier to outside elements. The small opening in the bottle means that the product will easily be closed off to the elements after use. The opening also means that there is less of a chance of spreading germs through the product as there is limited contact with the skin.
Convenience of Use The convenience of using tottle bottles is what makes them popular with many consumers. Storing the bottles on their caps means that the product will comes out of the bottle more easily. The product settles near the cap and simply squeezing the bottle gets the product out. The feel of the bottle is also a factor. Tottle bottles are easy to hold and easy to use. Many consumers prefer the look and feel of the bottle to other cosmetic containers. |

Different material bottle Glass Bottle, Metal Bottle or Plastic Bottle for Essential oils
The best equipment to use when blending or working with essential oils is GLASS!
Glass is impervious to essential oils and essential oils cannot be damaged by the glass. Glass Beakers and Stirring Rods are perfect for stirring and blending essential oils.
Glass mixing bowls work great for blending essential oils with lotions and creams. The best part is ¡°Clean up¡± is easy and thorough.
Some metals on the other hand can react with various essential oils. Never use Aluminum to store undiluted essential oils as some essential oils have chemical constituents that can cause the aluminum to be damaged and leach into the essential oils. (Namely ¨C strong essential oils like Cinnamon or Thyme).
If you need to use a metal bowl or container the best is high grade Stainless steel. And stainless steel is ideal for stirring and mixing. You should only be using Stainless steel spoons, whisks and spatulas. Do not use plastic or wooden spoons.
Some types of plastic bowls can be used for blending and mixing but most plastics have a tendency to absorb the essential oils. And this makes it near impossible to clean afterwards.
PET or HDPE Plastics can be used to store blended products such as lotions and massage oils. But again, once they are used with essential oils the plastic container may not be able to be used for other scented products due to the absorption of the scent.
We suggest you use a silicone or nylon based ¡®scrapers¡¯ not a rubber based one. Again, essential oils will ruin the rubber. Having several scrapers on hand to scrape your bowl makes blending a more complete job and allows you to save every bit of your creation!
CLEANING:
After a busy day of blending or if you wish to reuse your essential oil bottles you will need to clean them thoroughly.
Use the hottest water available and some soap or detergent. Let them soak for a few minutes.
Use a small bottle cleaning brush to clean the insides. This brush comes in handy especially if you need to remove sediment. In tiny bottles you can use a Q-tip or tooth pick to remove stubborn remnants.
Rinse with more hot water, and turn upside down to drain on clean paper towels.
For bowls, Glass Beakers and other containers: we suggest you rinse them with hot, soapy water and after that if you desire you can run them through your dish washer.
Warning: never put containers that have not been completely rinsed to remove the majority of the essential oils in your dishwasher.
Unless it is just a drop or two, essential oils can damage the internal workings of your dishwasher ¨C remember you don¡¯t know where all the ¡®rubber¡¯ based parts are inside your dishwasher and you can ruin your dishwasher.
Once you have cleaned and rinsed your equipment you still have one more thing to do to get them ready for the next blending adventure. Since you still could have a little tiny bit of essential oil residue left inside your bottles or droppers or one your equipment and you don¡¯t want to have it there.
The last thing to do is to rinse them with alcohol. We don¡¯t recommend rubbing or denatured alcohol as they have too much water content and other impurities in them.
We suggest you purchase high ¡°proof¡± (high percentage of alcohol) cheap vodka. It is virtually odorless and has no impurities. Because it has a high alcohol content your glassware will dry quickly too.
The alcohol dissolves and helps remove any residual essential or carrier oils that might be in your bottles and droppers. You can use a Rinsing bottle to do this or if you don¡¯t object you can use a spray bottle to spray the surfaces, let the excess alcohol flow out and let them dry on paper toweling. Wow! Now go have some fun Blending!

How to Use Up Those Aging Essential Oils
Within this article, all volatile oils including essential oils, absolutes and CO2s are collectively referred to as "essential oils."
Over time, essential oils can oxidize and gradually lose their therapeutic value. The aroma of essential oils also can change over time.
If an oil smells really weak or dramatically different after a period of time, it's best to dispose of it and not try to find a suitable use for it.
Essential oils that have aged and no longer possess the fresh, full aroma that it used to have are no longer considered therapeutic. Avoid using such oils in any aromatherapy products or application that will come into direct contact with your skin. Old oils should also be avoided in room sprays and diffusion applications where people and pets can directly inhale the volatile components of the oil.
Not all essential oils age poorly. Patchouli and sandalwood are two examples of oils that can mature beautifully with age. See the Essential Oil Shelf Life article for guidelines on the life span of essential oils.
If you can tell that an aging essential oil smells weak but still aromatically pleasant, there are a few ways that you can still get some value out of that aging oil:
Homemade Dryer Sheets
Follow AromaWeb's Dryer Sheet Recipe with your older clear essential oils.
Fabric Softener Additive
Add several drops of a clear essential oil to a Vinegar Fabric Softener Recipe or add it to your commercial fabric softener. Do not allow undiluted essential oils to directly come into contact with your clothing.
Drain Freshener
Add 1-2 drops of your aging essential oil to a stale/smelly drain to help disinfect and eliminate the odor. Do not pour more than 1-2 drops down your drain as essential oils can harm water supplies. See the Essential Oil Disposal article for more information.
Trash Receptacle Freshener
Add 1-2 drops of essential oil to the bottom of your trash liner to help eliminate odors and detract insects and rodents. Peppermint is especially helpful in detracting rodents.

Aluminum essential oil bottles are ideal for packaging essential oils, flavors, and cosmetic products. Essential oils and flavors have been packaged in aluminum bottles for decades. Aluminum essential oil bottles by infullpak provide superior protection from spoilage. Most essential oils can be stored easily in plain aluminum; in a few cases, epoxyphenolic coatings are used to ensure product compatibility.
Aluminum essential oil bottles also have the added advantage of being lightweight, leak-proof, vapor-proof and tamper-proof, ensuring the quality of the essential oils and flavors and preventing contamination. |

When storing essential oils, whether a single oil or a blend, it is so important to take proper care and attention! If oils are stored improperly and are exposed to light or heat, they will quickly lose some of their potency and effectiveness.
We have many sizes of essential oil dropper bottles available, including 5ml, 10ml, 15ml, 30ml, 50ml and 100ml sizes. Our Essential Oil dropper bottles are available in amber or blue colored glass, and come with either black or white dropper caps which include tamper evident lids with the orifice reducer / dropper. When the lids are sealed tightly, the oils are not exposed to air, which means they won't evaporate as quickly. The coloured glass also prevents excess light from shining onto and breaking down the oils.
Some tips on Essential Oil storage:
Always store essential oils in tightly closed, dark colored glass bottles.
Always store essential oils in a cool dark place, away from bright light exposure
Be most careful with the storage of Citrus oils, such as Orange, or Lemon as they are most volatile - they evaporate rapidly - and can spoil very quickly in sunlight.
Always store essential oils away from children and pets as they are very potent and need to be treated with respect.
The benefits of having empty essential oil bottles in your aromatherapy cabinet are endless. Not only can these bottles be used for storing essential oils, but are also suitable for herbal extracts and tinctures, aromatherapy recipe blends, carrier oils or any other liquid that may be used in small quantities.
Many people will take advantage of the savings involved in buying larger bottles of essential oils and then split the oils into smaller quantities and share with friends or family.
Another idea gaining popularity is the giving of personal essential oil blends for gifts around the holidays or at Birthday celebrations. People love to get something so personal and thoughtful as a perfume or diffuser blend that was created specifically with them in mind.
Whatever your aromatherapy level, it is always handy to have a few empty essential oil bottles in your collection for whatever need that arises. |

A polymer, by definition, is a long chain molecule composed of smaller parts called monomers. The derivation of the term is the combination of poly (meaning many) and mer (meaning parts). Monomers are generally very simple molecules which are chemically combined or polymerized many times until it attains the final desired properties as a polymer. |
|
|
|
All polyethylene is made from petroleum feedstocks also known as hydrocarbons. Both the feedstocks (and raw materials) and polyethylene are composed of only hydrogen and carbon (hydrocarbon). In North America, the feedstock is typically natural gas. |

For sanitary reasons, recycling companies require that all containers offered for recycling are completely clean and free of product residue such as creams and lotions. This also ensures that any debris is removed to avoid contaminating the recycling process. |
|
|
|
Recyclers can only accept those items made from materials that are easily recognizable such as PET (soda and water bottles) or HDPE (milk or detergent bottles). Most community recycling guidelines don¡¯t include cosmetic closures (such as compacts or lipstick cases) because they do not readily recognize the materials they are made from. |

Waste to Energy facilities generate electricity and/or steam from waste by feeding mixed municipal waste into large furnaces dedicated solely to burning trash and producing power. These facilities perfected the science of converting trash to steam and electricity, while strictly controlling emissions. |
|
|
|
Packaging will be sent to a consolidation operation. Bottles, jars, caps and tubes will be separated and, where appropriate, will be sent to recyclers who will grind, wash and re-palletize the plastic or glass resin for use in new items, such as bottles, jars, closures, paint cans and park benches. We hope that through the Return to Origins recycling program a significant portion of the material can be recycled into new items and the remaining material can be used for energy recovery. |
|
|
|
Primary packaging is the packaging that protects the actual product (glass and plastic jars, bottles, tubes, caps, lipstick covers). The following are not accepted as part of the recycling program:
Secondary packaging of any sort including paper boxes, plastic or cellophane wrappers, shopping bags, etc.
Samples containers, special/trial size products from promotional kits
Cosmetic applicators or tools such as disposables, puffs, sponges, scissors, spatulas, swabs, sharpeners, tweezers and curlers
Makeup accessory items including bags, belts, makeup cases, etc. |
|
|
|
Cosmetic packaging may never find a home in curb side recycling, but we have an opportunity to find new uses for packaging that may otherwise end up in a landfill. Origins will accept primary cosmetic packaging - regardless of brand - and recycle them for you or use them for energy recovery. |

Women confess to having about on average 12 products in their vanities, (according to an April 2008 survey commissioned by O.B. Tampons). With 112,804,773 women over 20 living in the U.S.**, that¡¯s a lot of packaging! Unfortunately, according to the EPA, approximately 1/3 of landfill waste is made up of this type of packaging. |
